About Manhattan Psychiatric Center (MPC)
Manhattan Psychiatric Center offers inpatient and outpatient treatment for adults with mental illness.
Inpatient Services: Within the inpatient service are several special services. All of these services require that the patient meet the general criteria for hospitalization at MPC. These services are:
- Hispanic Ward: for patients who speak only Spanish and/or whose cultural identity is primarily Hispanic. Services include treatment services provided in Spanish, culture specific events, and liaison with community based culturally appropriate resources.
- STAIR Unit: for patients with a history of interpersonal violence, but are psychiatrically stable & able to participate in a cognitive/ behavioral education program. This unit provides a very structured environment and enriched educational approach so as to assist patients in anger management, reasoned thinking & rational behavior without risk to themselves or the broader community.
- Polydipsia Ward: for patients with the medical condition of hyponatremia. This ward provides the structured environment to control patients' water drinking and successfully monitor their sodium levels, preventing medical emergencies.
- Treatment Refractory Ward: for patients who need an intensive review of their non-responsiveness to basic approaches at psychiatric stability. This ward provides innovative approaches to psychopharmacology and learning techniques.
- Outpatient Services: Located on the 11th & 12th floors at 163 West 125th St., NYC 10027, these services serve MPC's discharged patients, but are open to anyone in need of mental health treatment who wishes to enroll. A full brochure is available upon request.
- General Clinic Treatment: The clinic provides the entire array of treatment necessary to assist clients in remaining healthy and able to manage their illness while living in the community. Medication, therapy, group work, mental illness education & symptom management training, levels of case management, medical referrals and monitoring, crisis intervention, self help, substance abuse counseling and other services are all available as needed.
- Cognitive/Behavioral Education: In addition to the above, selected clients may benefit from the education given to STAIR inpatients (see above).
- Intensive Case Management: A specific Medicaid reimbursed service for eligible identified clients, this provides 24 hours/day, 7day/week emergency coverage, as well as intensive support services to those least able to manage life in the community.
- Case Management/Bridger Services: In order to successfully make the transition from hospital to community, many clients require 1:1 individualized support services. These programs work with each person to provide such support as needed, for as long as needed.
- Crisis Residence: For those in mental health treatment but temporarily without housing, this residence provides short term housing while the client and treatment team attempt to secure more permanent living accommodations.
- Transitional Residence: For patients who cannot make the transition directly from the hospital to a community residence, this provides an interim supportive location from which they can learn the skills, develop the track record, complete financial arrangements, and/or become more confident of their ability.
