Criminal History Background Checks

Fingerprinting is now managed by the Justice Center

As of July 1, 2013, the Justice Center for the Protection of People With Special Needs has assumed the administration of the criminal background check process for OMH facilites and OMH licensed and funded providers. Please refer to the OMH Justice Center Background Information Page for more information.

The existing information on the BCHI homepage is now out of date, and the contact numbers listed for BCHI will soon be out of use, as remaining staff is being reassigned and relocated. BCHI will no longer exist as a separate bureau as its (one) remaining function is being assumed by BQM.

Mental Hygiene Law §31.35 and Executive Law §845–b require that criminal history information be obtained from the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) before certain providers of mental health services can hire or engage prospective employees/volunteers who will have "regular and substantial unrestricted physical contact" with clients.
