Sesame Street Workshop
Parent's Guide to Helping Children Cope with Stress

dad and kids

Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street, and the New York State Office of Mental Health have partnered over the years to produce materials for children and their families to help them cope with whatever life might throw their way.

You Can Ask! was produced shortly after the World Trade Center disaster to help children deal with a variety of stressful situations. Talk, Listen, Connect was produced to address the vast and growing population of military service members with young children who face the unique challenges that military life entails; the frequent moves, the loss of a parent through deployment or multiple deployments, the stress of homecoming, and the challenges of when a parent comes home with a combat related injury.

These materials include videos suitable for family viewing, resource guides for parents and caregivers, tips for talking with pre-school and school-age children, and links to access additional online materials for adults and activities for children.

You Can Ask! Leaving OMH site

You Can Ask! is a tri-lingual (English, Spanish, and Chinese) multimedia outreach program that suggests positive ways for adults to talk with 3- to 8-year-old children about their feelings and concerns. Whether children are worried about moving to a new home or school, facing the illness or death of a loved one, afraid about war, or concerned about their own safety, these materials can help.
